Who we are
Builders based in Calcot, working across Reading
Arch Stoneworks Ltd is a building company based in Calcot. We build house extensions, convert lofts and put roofs on — on other people’s houses in Calcot, Tilehurst, Theale, Southcote, Purley and right across west Reading.
What makes us slightly unusual is that all three of those are in-house. A lot of building companies will happily take on your extension and then sub-let the roof to whoever is free that month. When the roofer does not turn up, your job stops and nobody is responsible. We do the groundworks, the structure, the roof and the finishes ourselves, so the programme is ours to keep — and so is the blame if it slips.
We work from your architect’s drawings and your structural engineer’s calculations, book the West Berkshire Council building control inspections as the job progresses, and hand over with the paperwork in order.

Four things we will not compromise on
Do it once, properly
Cutting a corner on a foundation or a flashing saves a day now and costs a fortune in five years. We build things the way we would want them built in our own houses.
Tell you the truth
If your idea will not work, or there is a cheaper way to get the same result, you will hear it at the quote stage rather than half way through the build.
Turn up
The single most common complaint about builders is that they disappear. We run one job at a time properly rather than three badly.
Leave it clean
Sheeted floors, skips emptied, and the site swept at the end of the day. You still have to live there while we work.
The work
Finished jobs, not showroom photos
Every photograph on this website is a job we have actually built. The open-plan kitchen diner here started life as a small rear kitchen with a back door onto the garden; it is now one room running the full width of the house, with a bi-fold opening, a dropped ceiling with recessed lighting and large-format porcelain running through without a threshold strip.
That is the kind of work we like best — the sort where, once it is finished, you cannot tell where the old house stopped and the new one started.
